“Why is it so effing bad this time?” I’m on the other side of an unusually brutal migraine flare. There are a handful of times in my life that I’ve gone to urgent care for migraine, and this was one of them. 🏥 My migraine attack came on stronger than usual one Saturday morning, and my normal acute meds were never able to snuff it out. For six days, the migraine attack was still there, lurking in the shadows. 🫣 I’d try to do my regular day-to-day activities, but would need to lie down. I just felt inexplicably sad and easily overwhelmed.😭 Being around people and leaving the house felt overstimulating. As the days went on like this, it became harder and harder to keep the peace with this nasty migraine attack that had taken up residence in my head. As the Pain Reprocessing Therapy coach that I am, I’d remind myself that it’s ok to rest and be gentle with myself. That I’d be ok and tried to stay warm and welcoming to the intense sensation in my head. ✌️ I practiced yoga nidra everyday and listened to my new favorite audiobook trilogy “The Henna Artist” by Alka Joshi, doing my best to stay calm and enjoy myself as I waited for the pain to pass. But by the morning of Day 5, the first thing I said to myself when I woke up was: 🤬 “This motherf**r is still here?!” When it drags on like this for days on end without improvement, I’ve learned from experience that it’s time to bring in the big guns and go to urgent care. Thankfully urgent care was totally empty and the nurses were super nice, turning the lights down for me and bringing me a warm blanket. 👩⚕️ Since it was nighttime and I didn’t want to be wired before bed, I got a Toradol shot, Benadryl and Zofran. I asked the nurse if I could get a Decadron steroid prescription if I needed it the next day. And yes, I definitely needed it the next day. I couldn’t believe that all the drugs I had tried had hardly made a dent! It was finally after I took the Decadron steroid pill that my epic migraine attack started to improve. Plus the steroid left me feeling pumped and hyped for a day! 😃 You can see me dancing with joy after the migraine attack broke in this silly IG reel. It took a few more days of laying low for me to feel my resilience come back and the pain fully diminish. I know some of you have lived with this level of pain (or worse!) day after day for YEARS. 😫 I used to experience chronic migraine as well. My recent migraine flare reminded me just how debilitating and agonizing migraine can be. My heart goes out to you migraine warriors who endure such intense pain and symptoms without relief. 💜 Migraine is a spectrum disease, where it can feel completely debilitating on one end and annoying but more manageable on the other end. At different times in our lives, we may shift up and down that migraine spectrum. We all have different life experiences and genetics, but I do believe that wherever we land on the migraine spectrum, our migraine can improve. 📈 Flares are a feature of migraine, not a flaw and NOT your fault. Even migraine health coaches like me experience inexplicable migraine flares that no amount of yoga or positive thinking can relieve. That’s why I believe in using all the tools at your disposal to move you down the migraine spectrum without shame, including meds, yoga, Pain Reprocessing Therapy and daily self-care habits. 💊🧘♀️😌🚶♀️ And how important it is to be connected to our migraine community. The flood of sweet empathetic DMs and comments I received on Instagram truly meant so much and made me feel so cared for. 🥹 Thank you so much for your caring and love. Sending you love as we all ride these crazy migraine waves together.
